Investigative Photograph
A high-ranking Russian army officer has been killed following an blast in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.
The incident happened on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle detonated, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.
The committee indicated that one possible explanation involves the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.
Location of the Incident
Officials have been dispatched to the scene, which is said to be in a south district of the city.
Media coverage suggest the blast took place in a vehicle lot near a residential building.
Pattern of Assaults
Since the onset of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.
This most recent event comes after other serious incidents, for instance:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely formally acknowledged as a matter of official stance.
The war has increasingly seen clandestine operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.
The examination into General Sarvarov's death continues to be active.
