The Contents of the Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?

For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories forged from the memories of Vecna. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—an event that could contain the means to overcome him for good.

Editor's Note: This article contains major spoilers for the concluding episodes.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points this season, the significance of the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is understood of his research, the container would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the kids under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the box could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy was transported in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to gain strength.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the ultimate battle to come.
